The students of K2HH planned, designed and made a shelter for a stray cat called Sissy. We worked as a team using safety items such as goggles when we were hammering and drilling. We tested our shelters to see if they were waterproof, windproof and durable and we are proud of the result.
The ISS staff would like to share their ‘Happy’ video with you. The students loved watching it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4xt4wnPZHk&feature=youtu.be
With the help of some parents (thanks Misha, Mike and Kaeko), K2 enjoyed an exciting morning of inquiring into materials, their properties and the tools required to cut, join, mould etc. The stations including areas where the children could create models out of recycled material; build models; inquire into magnets; explore water and what sinks and floats; cut various materials using saws, scissors, knives etc; make paper out of recycled paper using a blender; explore the effect of light on different materials; hammer, drill and screw into various materials; discover and learn about rocks - where they come from and what they are used for; make models from clay, wire, play dough, plastic etc. It was an exciting and interesting experience for the students who were engaged and responsible throughout the whole session. They understood the need for small groups, safety goggles and adult supervision. Have a look at these photos! On Tuesday the Grade 3 students encouraged us to focus on Earth Day and think about how we can help our planet. We brainstormed ideas and then the class were asked to send photos of action that they took at home. We also took photos of the children being proactive in class about closing the fridge door, switching off the air-con and the lights. We will continue to recycle paper and plastic bags in class. Well done K2! Thank you to Grade 2 AR for reading to us on April 11th. We loved your stories that you had created and enjoyed you reading them to us. We would love you to do that again! We were excited to show our parents what we have learning so far in K2!
We have been using iPads to make a family book. We wrote using a pen or we used text. Ms Hazel printed our books. We were telling our Mums, Dads, Grandmas about the book. We told our Mums and Dads how to do the number balance - we were learning about addition. We also practiced 'Grab and Count'. We told them how we do 'Style' - we match the picture and the word and if all the answers are correct we get the right picture. We went to see the other teachers who teach us in school. We shared our writing in our journals. We taught our parents some Mandarin. We thought it was - good, great, super, exciting, wonderful, yippee! The students wanted to share some of the activities that happened this week in K2. "People brought lovely books to school." "We brought our books to assembly." "DEAR - Drop Everything And Read!" At the beginning of the week we finished decorating our door as 'The Rooster's off to See the World'. All the students painted, cut and glued making a lovely door decoration. On Tuesday we brainstormed ideas and then wrote the beginning of a K2 collaborative story, which we have passed on to Ms Leah's class. On Wednesday Shirley Chu, abandoned her maths classes In high school to come and read a couple of books to us. Then later that same morning a G4 student, Ran, read half of the book that she wrote and published when she was in G2! After the book fair on Thursday, we listened to Sarah Mounsey read two of her books - 'Purple Paw Prints' and 'Paw Prints on the Magic Sofa'. We all loved those books. And today, Friday, was dress up as a character day ! We also enjoyed the mother tongue story session. check out our photos! On Tuesday a'stranger' (Ms Hazel's friend Mandy), came to visit our class when the teachers were (conveniently) out of the room. After she introduced herself, but did not say she was a friend or a teacher, she asked if the children would like to go with her to see the puppies in her car - parked outside the school! Almost all the children followed her and were prepared to go out the school gate.
We later talked about why they thought it was safe to go with her and the responses were: "She told us her name." " She was nice". "We wanted to see the puppies" Of course our students feel safe in school, which is how it should be, but we wanted them to recognize that a stranger is someone you have never met and even if they introduce themselves they are still a 'stranger'. Hopefully a lesson well learned! Following on from last week when we identified safety issues in school, we wrote letters to Ms Alden asking if she could have a few areas fixed to keep us safe. Ms Alden said she would try to have them fixed as soon as possible and thanked us for being safety conscious.
Today we sang a song in assembly for Chinese New Year. It is called 'Gong Xi Ni Ya' We wore Chinese or red clothes. 'It was brilliant', said Tom. 'It was fantastic', said Patricia. 'It was amazing', said Snehansh. We thought we did a great job!
